Rhyming text inquires further: "One with hair? One that's bare? One that likes to sit and stare?" Subsequent interrogation definitely focuses on some of the less savory aspects of dog life ("One that sheds? One that rips things into shreds?" or "One that pees on Christmas trees?") until finally the listener reconsiders: "No thank you, none of these. We want a cat!" While cat owners will laugh wryly at the notion that a cat means less of these problems, the rapid-fire controlled descriptions of minor canine chaos will entice audiences and novice readers alike. The digital art in red and black combines modern grid elements with a classic mid-century feel, recalling Nicholas Mordvinoff in its mischievous canine cast and streamlined compositions. Youngsters will adore following along with the sharply characterized dogs and bouncy rhyme; a concluding photo demonstrates that the author can't resist a dog despite his protestations, a sentiment that viewers will likely share.
