Abstract

H. E. Humphreys, Jr., chairman of the board of U.S. Rubber Co., has suggested that U.S. industry put its thinking and actions on a global basis. Speaking before the Manufacturing Chemists' Association meeting (page 34), he said U.S. industry should be as ready to build a plant in India as in Indiana. His ideas are more than mere pipe dreams. He approaches the matter of tariffs forthrightly, declaring that today he will fight for tariffs protecting his industry on imported products made at very low wages. But he admits that tariffs just won't do for the long run. What to do about it? Get U.S. industry participating all over the free world as one way to raise standards of living in less developed countries. The resulting rise in wages will put competition on a more even basis.
