Abstract

Summary This article describes the work of the Bristol primary exclusion project which has contributed to a 46 per cent drop in the permanent exclusions of primary age children in Bristol in the academic year 1996‐97. It outlines a multi‐agency team approach to supporting young children on the verge of exclusion and describes the roles and support structures within the team. The article also offers an analysis of the referral data and evaluates the outcomes in terms of final placements for the ‘graduates’ and feedback both from the schools and the team. Conclusions are drawn about the value of the team's approach and the continuing development of its work.
