Abstract

The article examines the definitions of a language barrier in scientific literature, analyses the possible causes of language barriers and ways to overcome them by foreign students. Hypothesis: it seems possible to improve students’ performance and teach them to overcome barriers in foreign language communication by increasing the level of awareness and self-organisation of foreign speakers. The research methods included theoretical and methodological analysis of philosophical, psychological, pedagogical and methodological literature, questionnaires and a written survey. Results: during the study, it was found that in the scientific literature there is no unambiguous definition of the “language barrier” concept; such concepts as cultural, communicative, semantic, psychological and linguistic barriers are considered. Overcoming difficulties of various kinds, according to domestic and foreign researchers, is facilitated by a high level of personal stability, moral attitudes, and self-actualisation. High academic results are associated with the compensatory competence of students, the level of motivation, cognitive flexibility, the ability to mobilise internal reserves, self-organisation skills and the creative potential of the individual.
