Abstract

A solid layer with stress-free, plane and parallel boundaries is called a plate. Horizontally polarized waves in plates where the particle displacements are parallel to the boundaries have been considered above (Exercise 4.4.8, 9). More important, however, is the case of vertically polarized waves in plates. In this case, displacements lie in the “vertical” plane, i.e., the plane which includes the normal to the boundaries as well as the propagation direction. Below we will consider different kinds of vertically polarized waves in plates. Waves in thin plates will be considered in more detail.
