Abstract

Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation has typically played a significant role in smart antenna systems. It finds the directions impinging on an antenna array to increase the performance of the received signal in an adaptive antenna array system. To use DOA estimation methods that apply to most of the communication environments has become the key technique for implementation. The classical algorithms such as Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) can get superior performance for DOA estimation in the rich receiving conditions, but they are not fit for adverse conditions such as a small number of array elements or snapshots and low SNR. In order to enhance the DOA estimation performance in adverse conditions, the modified method based on the discrete wavelet transform was investigated. This method acts as pre-processing denoising stage of MUSIC based DOA estimation algorithm. The modified method based on denoising namely Wavelet-MUSIC. The modified method works under low SNR of -6dB for closely spaced uncorrelated signals with resolution of 5°.
