Abstract

The paper presents a wavelet based technique for addressing the problems of high and low impedance fault detection and classification in transmission lines. The current magnitudes in high impedance faults being less, the over current protection relays remain inactive. In this paper, an algorithm to identify all the types of faults in transmission lines along with the phases(s) involved have been developed. The developed technique is robust to fault type, fault distance, fault resistance and fault inception angle. An integrated approach has been made to classify both high and low impedance faults by the same algorithm. Moreover, no data synchronization is needed as the current signals at one end of the line are analyzed for fault detection and classification.
