Abstract

Expanding the channel capacity is the pressing need of today's communication systems. Multiplexing is the technique of combining channels to achieve this without interference. Wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) systems and networks are currently being investigated for optical data transmission in telecommunication and computer local area networks etc, with a view to utilize the potential of high bandwidth of such system and networks. This paper reviews some basic wavelength division multiplexed optical systems and networks and their applications.
