Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses wavefront fields in the scattering of transient elastic waves by a surface-breaking crack. The chapter discusses application using a method for deriving the wavefront fields in the elastodynamic quarter-plane because of Miklowitz. The application concerns the scattering of transient elastic waves and wavefront fields by a surface-breaking crack. Such wavefront fields, generated by the interaction of incident surface or body waves, carry important information about the geometries of the surface-breaking crack. Information of this type is invaluable—in particular, to quantitative nondestructive evaluation (QNDE). The scattered wavefront fields in the present surface-breaking crack problem are generated by an incident line load on the free surface of a half-plane a distance—for example, from the crack (a Lamb type problem). Numerical results are presented for the surface-breaking crack.
