S. ; Kalra, G. L. Abstract Resonant interaction of coherent magnetoacoustic waves in a hot, tenuous, self-gravitating plasma in a uniform magnetic field is discussed. The plasma is described by the single-fluid ideal MHD equations. It is found that the resonant interaction between the wave-modes triggers instability at wavelengths shorter than the Jeans critical wavelength of instability as found in the linear theory. Instability initiated in the presence of a magnetic field grows at a faster rate than the corresponding instability in the absence of a magnetic field.
