Abstract

The distortion of wave packets in potential scattering is studied, and two characterizations of distortion are proposed. When the energy derivative of the scattering amplitude does not change appreciably over the spectral width of the incident wave packet, the characterizations of distortion produce simple formulas and lead to an interesting connection between distortion and time delay.
