Abstract

Asymptotic analysis is used to study the near field of sound scattering from cylindrical shells, including both shell responses and near-field pressure fluctuations. Explicit analytical solutions are given in terms of excited waves on the shell. Though derived by making use of high-frequency asymptotics, these solutions are shown to have very high accuracy in both the mid- and high-frequency domain. By using the derived solutions, contributions to shell responses respectively from compressional and shear waves are examined to reveal energy partition between these waves and to assess their relative coupling efficiency to the acoustic field.
