Abstract

A match day parking scheme was implemented in west Watford in October 2000 in response to calls from residents that action be taken to address the growing parking problems associated with matches (both football and rugby) played at Vicarage Road Stadium. Much of the area surrounding the stadium consists of terraced housing where space for parking is limited. It was felt that supporters ignored the needs of residents, often parking across driveways, and had no regard for safety. Residents complained that they were not able to leave their homes by car during a match because there would be nowhere for them to park on their return. The aim of the scheme was, and continues to be, to put the interests of residents first while providing limited parking opportunities for soccer and rugby fans visiting Vicarage Road Stadium on match days. In the summer of 2001 a review was carried out to gauge satisfaction levels among local residents affected by the scheme, and to hear views regarding potential changes and improvements. On the whole, the results of the survey showed that local residents were happy with the scheme, with many residents not wanting changes at all. Some residents on surrounding streets wished to be included in the scheme, having observed the benefits.
