Abstract

Waterborne alkyd and acrylic resins can be modified with silicone intermediates to improve their weather resistance in paints for exterior applications. The alkyds are modified through copolymerization before dispersion in water, using formulations and process conditions that minimize the tendency to gel. Acrylic latexes can be post treated with selected silicone intermediates at ambient temperature to give hybrid coating binders. In both cases, the gloss retention and chalking resistance of paint films are greatly increased.
