Abstract

Roots absorbing water from saline soils cause the rapid accumulation of soluble salts in the soil in close vicinity of the roots (rhizospheric soil). Thus the roots are in contact with a soil solution which is often several times more concentrated than that to be expected from average soil solution data. This paper describes a simple method to determine the reduction of the water uptake rate caused by salts in the rhizosphere.
