Abstract

ABSTRACTLake Prespa, together with Lake Ohrid is between oldest lakes in Europe. Their origin is back in Pliocene period. It consists of two lakes, Lake Big Prespa (surface area of 273 km; 853 m a.s.l.) and Lake Small Prespa (47 km, 857 m a.s.l). Lake Big Prespa is shared between Albania, Greece and Macedonia, and Lake Small Prespa between Albania and Greece.Catchment area of Lake Prespa is 1,200 km2. During last 20 years the water level of Lake Prespa considerably decreased as result of climate change accompanied by irrational human's use of the local inhabitants. Decrease of the surface level cosed sharp changrs of It's trophic state. In this article are presented results of the microbiological investigations (facultative oligotrophic bacteria, and some of the fisiological groups of bacteria), transparency in Lake Prespa during 2001–2006. Aim of these investigations was to find out its state in conditions of continuosly decrease of the lake volume. The index FO/H that indicate the capability of its water selfpurification as well.
