Abstract

AbstractMethods are described for accurate calculations of the water solubilities of sparingly‐soluble salts derived from weak acids and/or bases, when the known data are the solubility product and the ionization constants. Various cases are considered, with their possible extensions. Two successive‐substitution, always‐converging algorithms are developed for a rigorous treatment of some cases, for which also an approximate treatment is proposed. For other cases, an interval‐bisection algorithm is suggested. Conditions under which the conventional formulae can be safely employed are established. Practical examples of calculations are given and discussed.
