Abstract
Recent changes in legislation relating to the management of water resources in Northern Ireland are outlined and the major factors relating to the rationalisation of water services throughout the province are described. Legislation in Northern Ireland since 1972 is compared with earlier legislation in the province and with recent legislation in England and Wales. The major features of reorganisation in the province, namely the transfer of responsibility from local to central government, the recognition of the need to plan for multiple use of water resources in the future, and the increasing importance of Lough Neagh in the province's water supply strategy, are described. Recent figures on water consumption in the province are summarised.
