Abstract

Mathematical models are efficient tools for decision making in water management. Since dissolved oxygen (DO) is a vital factor for all aquatic organisms, many water quality models have been developed to compute the DO concentrations in water. Though biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is closely related to the DO value, the oxygen demand of deposit mud is also important. Therefore, control of mud deposition is necessary in improving the DO level in the water, which can be done by controlling flow velocity in the river. One possible method is by flushing with water from the main river or other sources. In this study, developed models are applied to determine the most suitable flushing rate for a branch tidal river which is connected to the main tidal river. These rivers are located in an urban area and receive lots of waste loads from the community. The developed branch-node model is used in water quality simulation while the Duflow package is used in river flow computation. The results obtained from these models can be used in the planning of suitable water quality improvement project. Hydraulic Engineering Software VIII, C.A. Brebbia & W.R.
