Abstract

The transient pressure caused by water hammer events is sufficient to fracture pipes and some equipment, and for this reason alone the study of the phenomenon in heating systems is of considerable practical importance. In addition, the by-pass pipe installed in a heating system as a protection device is effective to attenuate the transient pressure wave when power failure occurs. The paper describes the theory about transient analysis and shows technique in numerical simulation of water hammer caused by power failure taking an actual heating system as an example. The transient analysis has been performed for the heating system without and with by-pass pipe respectively firstly. Then, the by–pass pipe is selected based on the transient analysis. The objective is to show the importance of transient analysis to design and operation of heating systems and the function of transient analysis to selection of by-pass pipe.
