Abstract

Laboratory investigation of effects of support flexibility of cylindrical piles subjected to ocean waves by oscillating vertical cylinder through still water; lateral low-frequency cylinder oscillations of amplitudes to as much as cylinder diameter, resulted in lift and drag forces 4 1/2 times drag for uniform motion; vibrations at higher frequencies of less than 1% of diameter more than doubled drag force, and lift forces were approximately equal to uniform motion drag.
