Abstract

Abstract : A digital computer program was developed to predict the anti-icing requirements of engine inlets by calculating water droplet trajectories toward the particular inlet through a potential flow field. The incompressible potential flow field is determined by a separate computer program using known boundary conditions. The potential flow field results are combined with the droplet and flow physical data for input to a droplet trajectory computer program. This water droplet trajectory program is based on balancing the drag, buoyancy and weight forces on the water droplet with the rate of change of the water droplet momentum. The water droplet computer program is extremely versatile because the actual design shape is used in the study and therefore the results do not need to be extrapolated.
