Abstract

The great need for availability of potable water in the world motivated the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to study the feasibility of nuclear seawater desalination. Consensus was reached that nuclear desalination is technically feasible, though cost and social acceptability are recognized as major problems to overcome. In this paper, an inherently safe reactor concept with reduced cost is proposed. The reactor is a simple small modular nuclear reactor based on the fluidized bed concept with inherent safety and passive cooling characteristics.
