Abstract

Water conservation is a cost effective alternative to the development of new water supplies, and refer to the actions that must be instituted to reduce the usage of potable water by directly reducing water use that demands potable water level quality, as well as to substitute the use of potable water for alternative water supplies for those beneficial uses not requiring potable water level treatment. This chapter focuses on a review of a range of water conservation approaches and ideas in current practice and/or potentially viable for the reduction of water use across all sectors of society. Topics to be reviewed include water usage; water waste; and conservation efforts in power generation, by agriculture, in municipal and domestic applications, and by industry. An application section provides six illustrative examples of concepts and implementation of water conservation practices throughout society.
