Abstract

1.1. Net water and sodium transport were measured in vitro in everted sacs of jejunum prepared from immature cockerels maintained on diets with normal or high sodium content. Plasma sodium and plasma prolactin concentrations were also measured. Two groups consisting of 9 days old birds and birds between 28 and 35 days of age were compared.2.2. Water and sodium transport across jejunal sacs were significantly lower in birds of between 28 and 35 days of age than in 9 days old birds.3.3. In the older group only both water transport across the jejunum and plasma sodium and plasma prolactin concentrations were elevated by a diet high in sodium.
