Abstract
Intestinal water and electrolyte transport mechanisms continue to be characterized in increasing depth. This review deals principally with the modulation of these processes. In particular, there is continuing interest in the effects of luminal contents on intestinal function in both normal and disease states. Various aspects of extrinsic and intrinsic neural control have been investigated by several groups whose findings are discussed.
