Abstract

Near i.r. spectra have been recorded of the ν 2 + ν 3 water band and the first overtone of the NH stretching mode in solutions of N-methylpropionamide and water. Raman spectra have been recorded for the carbonyl stretching mode of the amide. The data have yielded the conclusion that interaction affinities are in the order water—amide > water—water or amide—amide with the bonding being that of the water proton to the amide carbonyl group. A maximum occurs in the viscosity of N-methylpropionamide—water solutions at a mole fraction of water of about 0.5.
