Abstract

In a country that has to import a great many of the products it needs for its subsistence and which faces large economic and social problems, it is essential to safeguard the environmental balance whilst taking into account the overriding requirement of making a profit from the available natural resources, through careful management. This article sets out the available data on the condition of the natural resources ‘Water, Air and Soil’ in Portugal. The article also discusses the country's present and future environmental policies and their relation to EC policies.
