Abstract

This article briefly outlines the controversy over the risks of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) and its continued use, and details the efforts at treatment of MTBE‐contaminated waters using activated carbon. Characterization methods of activated carbon are discussed along with adsorption kinetics. Simple guidelines are given to optimize the carbon usage and allow for more economical operation.
