Abstract

The physical properties of the interface between a cell monolayer and its substrate have been hard to measure directly and are risky to infer from mechanical measurements done on the top of the cell. A new method using local contraction of a hydrogel substrate allows measurements of basal surface stiffness and shows how an epithelial cell monolayer becomes stiffer as it initiates the epithelial-mesenchymal transition.
