Abstract

This article is a reflection of the importance and the difficulty of being present to, and with, terminally ill patients within a palliative care setting. It is offered as a reflective and interpretive piece on the work of a chaplain within the palliative care team. It includes an examination of the way in which the death of a patient reminds us of our own mortality and of the often-unacknowledged terror of death. Questions are asked about the distinctive role of the chaplain and what is it that the chaplain and other professionals within the palliative care team share. The article is written from a Christian perspective.
