Abstract

Factors affecting the optimal mean commuting distance under job decentralization are the degree of decentralization, the speed of decentralization, the degree of concentration, and the steepness of the population density function. Among these factors, it is concluded that the degree of concentration and the speed of decentralization are major factors. If these factors are explicitly considered in calculating the optimal mean commuting distance, there may not be as much wasteful commuting as found by Bruce W. Hamilton ( J. Political Econom., 90, 1035–1058, 1982).
