Abstract

Municipal solid waste management in Brazil is a complex issue. In 2010 Brazil established its National Policy on Solid Waste in which solid waste generation reduction, recycling and proper treatment were settled as management priorities. However, municipal solid waste management still presents challenges to be managed. Most of the municipal solid waste generated is landfilled. Recycling and recovery are incipient, despite waste pickers playing a fundamental role in the recycling of the country. Based on this panorama, this chapter presents an approach to the main characteristics of the most sensitive areas in solid waste management in Brazil, addressing its legal structure and some performance data on generation, collection and disposal, as well as discussing the informal sector issues, strongly present in the country. Finally, current and future prospects and challenges in Brazil are discussed.
