Abstract

Hyperoxia decreased capillary perfusion in rabbit tenuissimus muscle (Lindbom and Arfors, 1984) and in hamster cheek pouch (Duling, 1972). These changes would have increased inhomogeneity of red cell transit times. We wished to demonstrate a similar effect in canine hindlimb vasculature by washing in a hyperoxic bolus of a fluorocarbon emulsion (FC-43). The greater solubility of O2 in FC-43 was expected to have a greater effect that either saline or dextran on the more distal portions of the precapillary control vessels because of the lesser fall in PO2 in transit.
