Abstract

<h3>Record Number Hospitalized.—</h3> A record 25.3 million persons were hospitalized last year, almost 1 million more than in 1962, according to the American Hospital Association. The Health Insurance Institute noted this meant that in 1963 over 69,000 persons each day entered non-federal short-term general and other special hospitals, and that on an average day there were 533,000 patients—2.8 persons per 1,000 population— under hospital confinement. Data from the AHA also indicated that there were 698,000 beds available for patients in 1963, an average of 3.7 beds per 1,000 population. The association, which includes terminal hospitalizations in its survey, finds the average hospital stay for all ages to be 7.7 days. A study conducted by the US National Health Survey based on representative household interviews does not include terminal hospital stays and puts the average at 9.4 days.
