WASH by Design: A Design Case on the Collaborative Curriculum Project for Elementary Schools in Rural Papua New Guinea

Abstract

This design case chronicles the collaborative effort of designing the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) curriculum for elementary schools in rural Papua New Guinea (PNG). The outcome from the project resulted in the creation of a teacher’s resource manual for teaching WASH topics using learner-centered instruction that can be delivered in low-resourced classrooms. Teachers from four elementary schools participated in the design workshop and production of the resource manual. This case describes the context of the design, making of the design team, the design process, and the rationale behind the design decisions. Consistent with the structure of a design case (Howard, Int J Des Learn 2, 2011), this case is primarily written to describe how design was carried out in the context of PNG.
