Abstract

The authors describe the general attitude of Poincare toward quantum theory in his last popular lectures and in the two articles 'Sur la theorie des quanta'. They show that Poincare remained a classical scientist opposed to the new theory. Although he failed in avoiding the quantum hypothesis, Poincare did not renounce the defence of classical physics. The authors argue that Poincare ignored the implications of his own work on the N-body problem for the theory of black-body radiation.
