Abstract

The Christian interpretation of Virgil’s fourth eclogue is commonly assumed to have been adopted in late antiquity by Philargyrius in his commentary to the Bucolics. A closer examination of the texts shows that the Christian interpretation was added to Philargyrius’s exegesis by the Irish monks who compiled the two Explanations and the Scholia Bernensia to the Bucolics.
