Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of ovarian cancer on the quality of life of women. We used the single-case-study method for our investigation. We include a description of this method which corresponds to the procedure used in this case. Six main areas were noted, which mirrored the patient's experience: initial confrontation with the diagnosis, change in the woman's perception of her own body, feelings of female inadequacy, concerns about sexuality, fear and doubt, and changes in social life. These points are discussed with respect to the patient, the literature, medical care and medical practice. As a result of this examination it is possible to say that a woman's life is greatly influenced by gynecological disease, although the impact will depend on the woman's age, marital status, and ideas about the illness, all of which are linked to individual factors and the degree of familial and social support. This highlights the importance of the individual care and consultation services provided by oncologists.
