Abstract
Warfield was very much a product of multiple influences that he inherited, cultivated, and deployed, which are explored in this article in the context of a wider appreciation of his earlier life. This article gives attention to that earlier life, especially focussing onthe time up until he took a position in 1878 at Western Theological Seminary near Pittsburgh to teach New Testament.
