Abstract

The availability of synchrotron radiation from bending magnet sources has contributed in a major way to new research in physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and technologies. The newly proposed 6–7 GeV Advanced Photon Source based on insertion device sources (undulators and wigglers) will enhance the research capability in all these areas many-fold and provide new opportunites in even wider ranges of scientific and technological research. The characteristics of the synchrotron radiation from the insertion devices on a 6–7 GeV Advanced Photon Source will be discussed, highlighting their high brilliance and low beam divergence. Some of the unique scientific opportunities provided by such an insertion-device-based X-ray source will be presented.
