Abstract

A bunion is a painful thickening of the inner side of the base of the great toe. Underlying it there are three elements which will contribute to the final clinical picture (Figure 1). Firstly, there is a bony deformity in which the first metatarsal is displaced medially and the toe itself angulates laterally. This is hallux valgus, a term which is often used as the formal medical name for a bunion.
