Abstract

The mean and fluctuating velocity distributions in the wakes of circular cylinders with a stepwise change in diameter have been examined at a Reynolds number, based on the diameter of the big cylinder, of 8 × 10 4. Similar distributions on two-dimensional circular cylinders have also been examined. The detailed measurements show the three-dimensionality of the flow structures in the wakes and the effect of the diameter discontinuity on the mean flow and on the two vortex wakes generated behind the two cylinders.
