Abstract

Federal and state wage and hour laws are complex and violations can be costly. California law shares some similarities with federal law but also contains some important difference. Generally, California has a highly developed body of wage and hour law that usually exceeds federal requirements. If an employer is in compliance with California law, the federal requirements are also met, with occasional exceptions. Employee exemptions and child labor restrictions are especially hazardous areas. Employers must be vigilant about their compliance practices and maintain training programs for key personnel, including frontline supervisors.
