Abstract
his special section of PAJ is a parade or a patterning of approaches that takes language in performance and works it-Performance Writing. We are not a school. We are not new (ancestors crowd around us). We are not a we, but are brought together from my excitements, not from a wish to designate or define. The term Performance Writing can embrace us. It is a term invented for the Performance Writing Undergraduate Honours degree at Dartington College of Arts, Devon, where Caroline Bergvall, chris cheek, Ric Allsopp, and I teach. With the term Performance Writing, Dartington seeks to specify an area of work for new critical engagement, tackling contemporary critical and theoretical issues around the notions of writing, reading, and performing, and to focus attention on innovative works from the past and contemporary work which is critically neglected.
