Abstract

This article looks at the extent of the Oromo influence on the indigenous cosmology and healing practices of the pre-Oromo inhabitants of Wallo. In particular, Oromo influence is illustrated by the wadaja, a widely-practiced ceremony of communal prayer which we examine within the wider context of the history of Wallo. We show how the ritual survived over the centuries, along with its importance as an instrument to combat or reverse misfortunes that befall communities, and to treat patients suffering from disease-causing spiritual powers. Although all types of wadaja rituals were held in reverence, the purported role of the wadaja in matters related to health and disease was the major reason for its acceptance and popularity among the people. Documenting the history of the wadaja ritual contributes to our understanding of indigenous healing traditions and coping methods in Wallo.
