Abstract
This paper proposes ‘The Classic Reading Class Model that Combines WAC’ (writing across the curriculum)’ as a method for activating Classic Education. Recently, many universities in Korea have introduced Classic reading programs into their regular curricula. However, the mainstream of utilizing Classic reading materials is still seen as essentially a tool for communications subjects. This limited use of Classic reading in the Liberal Arts is not providing the effect of the reinforcement of basic thinking ability, integration of visions, the acquisition of reflection on wisdom and life, and understanding other cultures in the era of globalization. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce and encourage Classic reading in major field courses. For this, it is necessary to consider combining ‘WAC’ with Classic reading. Utilizing WAC, as a major writing class model, has various advantages. So the combination of WAC with Classic reading will be able to provide students with the benefits of Classic reading, including cultivating the knowledge necessary for their major field studies, while reinforcing their academic communication capacities. In this paper, we highlight a philosophy major field class model 「The Happiness in The Classics」 as a concrete example of the combination of WAC with Classic reading. As a result, we expect that Classic education could be activated in other major field classes as well.
