Abstract

compared to controls (1.61±0.18) (P=0.001), although this was observed through day 16 (1.37±0.23) (P<0.05). This change in villous to crypt ratio was secondary to crypt expansion, but, not villous shortening or blunting. Of note, C+ rats had a greater degree of villous widening at day 4 (30.4±4.8 units) compared to C+/CDT(24.9±2.4 units) (P<0.01). Little or no change in inflammatory cell infiltrates was seen during acute C. jejuni infection. By 3 months after clearance of C. jejuni, all histological changes were no longer present. Conclusions: Rats exposed to C. jejuni demonstrate early mucosal histological changes with villous widening being more pronounced in C+ rats. Features of inflammatory reaction were not observed. By 3 months after infection all histological changes returned to baseline.
