Abstract

Gunze Ltd. was founded in 1896 in the district of Ikaruga (modern-day Ayabe) to promote the local silkworm industry. Nylon stocking and inner wear production were launched after WWII. Around the oil shocks of the 1970s, Gunze Ltd. embarked on a new business development in the fields of plastic films and engineering plastics. Utilizing its expertise in plastic polymers and textile technologies, R&D of bioabsorbable medical devices was launched in the late 1970s. Firstly, surgical suture thread made of PGA was successfully commercialized in Japan in 1986 under technical assistance provided by Prof. Yoshito Ikada at Kyoto University. Subsequently, various kinds of bioabsorbable medical devices such as reinforcement felt, bone fixation device, and artificial dermis, were put into the Japanese market.
