The American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Clinical Issues Committee (CIC) has published 3 position statements on the issue of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in bariatric surgery, including the most recent in this issue of the journal [ [1] Aminian A. The authors of this accompanying editorial are the 3 previous chairs of the ASMBS CIC who served during the timeframe in which the previous statements were issued. Since there is limited high-quality data, these practice guidelines suggest some recommendations that are based on available knowledge, peer-reviewed scientific literature, and expert opinion regarding reasonable use of prophylactic measures for VTE in bariatric surgery patients.
